Invisible Man

about

Song for a creative project, based on "Invisible Man" by Ralph Ellison.

lyrics

Get on the bus, sit on ice-cold seats

If you look out the window, see they’re sleeping in the streets

They only see their make-believe, the bubble they maintain

Might as well be walking around with dark glasses and long canes

In a world of blindness, it’s a wonder how anybody sees

I wonder how they manage to walk without bumping into trees,

Seeing as they can’t see

I’d like to set an alarm clock on its highest volume

But the sleepers sleep as deep as I do on Saturday afternoon

Look a little harder into my black face

Or shall I lend you my ultraviolet light?

I’m not defined by my complexion, or is it your predilection,

To never use the eyes you have for sight?

You refuse to see me, but silent I will not be

Try an open mind on for size,

If you want to wake up, just open your eyes.

Screaming out, I was given a voice

Into a faceless crowd, painted white

I’ve got a million crimes I put on the white man’s invoice

Next time they’ll be running from me

and my Social Responsibility
